Fin AI alternatives: compare your helpdesk, workflows and billing model

Fin AI alternatives: keep your helpdesk and change the AI agent, or buy a desk with the agent included. Two buying paths, a dated sourced shortlist and a shortlist worksheet.
Table of contents

The right Fin AI alternative depends on which decision you are making: replacing the AI agent while you keep your helpdesk, or buying a new desk with the agent included. Fin already sits on both paths. It is built into Intercom, and on its own it works with Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other helpdesks at $0.99 per outcome, with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no additional seat costs. So an alternative has to win on three things: the helpdesks and channels it runs in, the jobs it does beyond answering, and a billing unit you can forecast.

FullSession Max AI sits on both paths too. Max runs inside Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other supported helpdesks, or your team uses the included FullSession Desk: the Desk app, shared inbox, human chat and supported integrations, with no seat fees. Max answers support questions in your web app and can co-drive the fix while the customer watches, answers buying questions on your website, and guides new users through setup steps it remembers across visits. One price covers all three: $0.39 per AI-assisted conversation, with a $99 monthly minimum credited toward conversations. See what the Desk includes.

Below: the two paths, Fin's current terms, a sourced shortlist of five other agents, a jobs check, one equal-count cost example and a shortlist worksheet. Vendor facts come from each vendor's own pages, checked 19 October 2026. Replacing Intercom's helpdesk as well? The Intercom alternatives guide covers that wider platform choice.

Two decisions behind a Fin alternatives search

Path A: keep your helpdesk and change the agent. Your queues, routing, reporting and seats already work; the open question is which AI answers first and hands over to your team. The helpdesk subscription stays on the bill whichever agent you choose.

Path B: buy a desk with the agent included. You have no helpdesk yet, or yours is part of the problem. Now the human side is in scope: shared inbox, human chat, assignment, office hours, and how the people who take over are priced. Seats can decide the total.

Agents built to sit on an existing helpdesk belong on path A. Helpdesks with a native agent belong on path B. Fin and Max appear on both. Decide the path first and the shortlist gets shorter.

Decision flow for replacing an AI agent: start from your current setup; if your helpdesk works, keep it and compare agents that run inside it on helpdesk and channel support, jobs, billing unit and the retained helpdesk cost; if you need a new desk, compare desks with the agent included on the human inbox and chat, seat pricing, billing unit and jobs; both paths run the same sample conversations and classify each one under every vendor's billing definition before deciding.
Illustrative decision flow, not a product screenshot. Open the diagram at full size.

The same flow in four steps:

  1. Start with your current setup: helpdesk, channels and who takes over.
  2. If your helpdesk works, take path A: compare agents that run inside it on helpdesk and channel support, jobs, billing unit and the helpdesk subscription you keep.
  3. If you need a new desk, take path B: compare desks with the agent included on human inbox and chat, seat pricing, billing unit and jobs.
  4. On both paths, run the same sample conversations and classify each one under every vendor's billing definition, then decide.

What Fin does today, from Fin's own pages

Fin's pricing page offers two setups. Fin with the Intercom helpdesk adds Intercom seats, from $29 per helpdesk seat per month. Fin with your current helpdesk lists "Salesforce, Freshdesk, HubSpot, Zendesk, and more", unlimited teammates and "No additional seat costs". Fin's own November 2024 product update says you can use Fin "with any helpdesk". Fin does not require Intercom seats unless Intercom is also your helpdesk.

The connection differs by helpdesk. In Zendesk, Fin works on tickets from email or contact forms and in Zendesk messaging, which needs Sunshine API access; Fin's help center says Sunshine is included from Suite Professional up or can be bought separately. In Salesforce, Fin picks up cases from email and web forms and hands live chat to Salesforce In-App Messaging; other Salesforce channels are listed as coming soon.

Fin charges $0.99 per outcome. Under Fin's outcome definitions (updated 17 September 2026), a service outcome is a resolution or a Procedure handoff, charged at most once per conversation. A resolution is confirmed by the customer or assumed when they leave without asking for more help, including after 24 hours of silence following Fin's last answer. A Procedure handoff is billed when Fin completes a Procedure you configured to end in a handoff. A customer's request for a person is not billed.

Sales is the hinge for many teams. Fin lists qualifications at $9.99 each, and its help center says Fin for sales (qualifications and disqualifications) "is currently not available with Fin for platforms outside of Intercom." If you run Fin on Zendesk or HubSpot and also want AI on website buying questions, check whether that means a second tool or a different agent.

Fin AI alternatives: where each runs and what it bills

This shortlist keeps to agents whose own pages document where they run or how they bill. The path labels and the "confirm in a demo" column are my judgments; every fact links to the vendor's page, checked 19 October 2026. A listed integration is a connection to confirm, not proof that every channel or action works in your account.

Ada and Decagon document integrations but not prices, so ask for the unit, minimum and term in writing. The path B desks publish seat prices and count AI work differently: resolutions, sessions or automated interactions. Max and Fin are the two that publish one per-unit price for both paths, which makes them the easiest pair to forecast before a sales call.

Path A: keep your helpdesk and change the agent

Here the agent works inside a system you already pay for. Four checks matter more than the feature list: which channels in your helpdesk the agent answers and what your plan must include (Fin's Zendesk messaging route needs Sunshine, for example); whether a handoff lands in your existing queue with the conversation attached; which sources, account data and actions the agent can reach; and the agent's unit plus the helpdesk you keep paying for.

Max runs inside Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other supported helpdesks. Supported integrations are included with Max; the helpdesk subscription stays separate. Max answers from your documentation, help center, pricing page, marketing site and support portal, and your own MCP server can supply the order, account and product data you choose to expose and the supported actions you permit. Visitors on your website and customers in your app always know they are talking to Max and can ask for a person at any time. In the walkthrough, confirm the helpdesk channels and jobs you need in that setup and how a handoff reaches your team's queue.

Path B: buy a desk with the agent included

Here the human side is part of the purchase. The desks on the shortlist price people differently: Intercom per seat, Zendesk and Freshdesk per agent, Gorgias by ticket volume. Their AI units differ too.

With Max, the FullSession Desk is included: the Desk app, shared inbox, human chat and supported integrations, with no seat fees. Your team takes over in the same thread with the conversation and available context, assigns conversations, controls who can view them and sets office hours with an away message; visitors can still leave a question after hours. Human chat is free. With optional Core CX / UX, from $39.20/mo billed annually, a teammate can also see the recorded session behind a conversation when that session was captured. The chatbot-to-human handoff guide shows how to design and test the takeover itself.

If your team runs email, phone or social-channel queues at volume, compare those helpdesk functions too; the Intercom alternatives guide covers that platform decision.

Compare the jobs, not only the answers

Answering questions from a knowledge base is the common baseline. The differences show up in the jobs around the answer. Test each finalist on the same work, and confirm every documented capability in your own setup.

Billable units: what each vendor counts

Unit prices are not comparable until you know what is counted: conversations for Max, outcomes for Fin, automated resolutions for Zendesk, sessions for Freshdesk, automated interactions for Gorgias. Two questions decide how a unit behaves on your traffic.

When does a charge start? A Max conversation starts at Max's first substantive answer, guidance or supported action; greetings, clarification-only exchanges, unaccepted proactive offers, human-only chat, internal tests and failed starts are not billed, and follow-ups, supported actions and text-to-voice switching stay within the fixed 24 hours. Fin and Zendesk charge for a result. Freshdesk counts interactions within 24 hours on chat, or 72 hours from the first email, as one session; Gorgias counts an interaction handled without a human for 72 hours.

What does a handoff cost? With Max, a handoff before substantive help is free; after it, the one conversation charge stands and human replies add no charges. Fin bills a Procedure handoff you configured, not a customer's request for a person. Zendesk's assisted escalations do not count against its allowance.

The worksheet turns this into a test. Take 20 recent conversations and, for each vendor, mark whether its definition would bill each one, not bill it, or leave it unclear, and ask the vendor to confirm the unclear ones in writing. That gives you a forecast built from your own traffic instead of a ratio someone else picked.

The vendors count different things. Max bills AI-assisted conversations: one user, one thread, a fixed 24 hours from Max's first substantive help. Fin bills service outcomes, at most one per conversation: a resolution, confirmed by the customer or assumed when they leave without asking for more help, including after 24 hours of silence, or a Procedure handoff; it does not bill a customer's request for a person. Equal counts are illustrative and do not establish identical workloads or guaranteed savings. Taxes, optional Core recording, Fin sales qualifications and other add-ons are excluded. Sources checked 19 October 2026: Max pricing, Fin pricing, Fin outcome definitions and Intercom plan terms.

The $99 Max minimum applies at 253 or fewer conversations a month and is credited, not added. For a full budget, including setup and costs outside the AI unit, use the AI chatbot pricing guide. For a direct two-product evaluation, see FullSession vs Intercom.

How to run your Fin alternatives shortlist

A shortlist is only useful if every finalist faces the same conversations in the setup you will actually run:

  1. Write down your path and constraints: the helpdesk and plan you keep, channels, languages and who takes over.
  2. Pull last month's Fin outcome count and pick 20 real conversations: simple answers, tasks, buying questions, requests for a person and questions the agent should decline.
  3. Fill in the grid for each finalist from its own pages, dated, with "not published" where a price or unit is missing.
  4. In each demo, run three of your conversations in the helpdesk or desk you will actually use, and ask the vendor to classify all 20 under its billing definition.
  5. Decide on documented jobs, confirmed deployment and a forecast from your own traffic.

The AI agent shortlist worksheet has the path check, the grid, the jobs test and the unit-mapping sheet, with blank fields. The Intercom alternatives guide has five more demo cases you can reuse.

Questions about replacing Fin

Does Fin require Intercom seats?

No, not on another helpdesk. Fin's pricing page lists Fin with your current helpdesk, including Salesforce, Freshdesk, HubSpot and Zendesk, with no additional seat costs and a 50-outcome monthly minimum. Intercom seats, from $29 per seat per month on Essential billed annually, apply only when Intercom is your helpdesk (checked 19 October 2026).

Can we keep Zendesk and replace Fin?

Yes. Several agents run with Zendesk, including FullSession Max, which runs inside Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other supported helpdesks. Check which Zendesk channels each agent covers, what your Zendesk plan must include and where handoffs land. Your Zendesk subscription stays on the bill.

Is a per-conversation or a per-outcome price easier to forecast?

A per-conversation price depends mainly on how many conversations the agent helps with. A per-outcome price also depends on how the vendor classifies each result, such as an assumed resolution. Either can be forecast by classifying a sample of your own conversations under the vendor's definition. Max's unit is one AI-assisted conversation for a fixed 24 hours, at $0.39, with a $99 monthly minimum credited toward conversations.

What does a handoff cost with Max and with Fin?

With Max, a handoff before substantive help is not billed. After it, the one conversation charge stands and human replies add no charges. Fin bills a Procedure handoff that you configured to end in a handoff, and it does not bill a customer's request for a person.

What do 1,000 conversations cost with Max compared with Fin?

In an illustrative month at equal counts, 1,000 Max AI-assisted conversations cost $390, plus your helpdesk subscription or with the included Desk. 1,000 Fin outcomes cost $990 plus your helpdesk, and Intercom Essential with 10 annual seats plus Fin comes to $1,280 a month. Equal counts do not prove identical workloads or guaranteed savings.
